A-Z Women’s Center currently provides abortions up to 18.6 weeks gestation based on ultrasound examination. All patients must have an ultrasound (sonogram), which is included in the basic fee. An ultrasound is necessary to confirm the pregnancy and insure proper calculation of the gestational age. All doctors date pregnancies from the first day of your LAST MENSTRUAL PERIOD, not from the date of conception.

RU486 | Abortion Pill
Medical (non-surgical) abortions commonly known as RU486 can be performed
on patients who are up to nine weeks pregnant (dated from the first day
of your last menstrual period). This procedure involves giving a series
of medications over a couple of days to induce a miscarriage. On the first
day of treatment, a patient is given Mifeprex (Mifepristone).
Office Requirements for the Abortion Pill:
» Must live in or surrounding area of Las Vegas
» Must have a valid Las Vegas ID or driver's license
» Must be over the age of 18 years old
» Must take off of work or school for 2 consecutive days
You will take home 3 cyctotec pills that will get inserted 18-24 hours
later, the patient is given Cytotec (Misoprostol) pills to insert into
the vagina. The combination of these two medications causes a miscarriage.
A transvaginal ultrasound examination must be performed during each office
visit to evaluate the effects of these medications. A small percentage
of patients (about 1 in 100) will still need to have a vacuum aspiration
and curettage (suction D&C) due to retained tissue. This procedure
requires extra time, counseling, at least 2 office visits with ultrasounds,
and doctor examinations.
About 1 in 100 patients will need to have a surgical rescue.
First Trimester Abortions
First Trimester Abortions are performed by vacuum aspiration and curettage
on pregnancies from 5 to 11.6 weeks since the last menstrual period. The
length of pregnancy is confirmed by ultrasound. The abortion may be performed
under local anesthesia (awake) or intravenous medication could be administered
for anxiety and pain control. Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) is available
for additional relaxation and pain relief. In order to have intravenous
medication, you must have some other adult to assist you in safely getting
home. You will not be able to drive or work for 24 hours after the intravenous
medication.
The average patient spends about 2 hours at our office, mostly completing
forms, and having the ultrasound and laboratory tests. The actual abortion
procedure usually takes only 5 minutes. Post-operatively, patients spend
about 15 to 30 minutes in the recovery room. We achieve this short stay
by scheduling individual appointments throughout the day, instead of group
appointments scheduled all at the same time.
Second Trimester Abortions
Second Trimester Abortions are performed on patients who are between 12
and 18.6 weeks pregnant. The length of pregnancy is accurately determined
by ultrasound. Patients less than 18.6 weeks pregnant are done in one
day.
Our center is uniquely qualified to manage genetics and fetal abnormality
cases. Often, these women have a desired and planned pregnancy. However,
thru various laboratory and ultrasound testing, a severe abnormality in
the fetus is discovered or the woman is found to have a medical condition
that makes the pregnancy unusually hazardous.
Our fees for genetic abnormality and maternal medical indications is determined
on a case-by-case basis.
